The State Research Center Optics and Material Sciences (OPTIMAS) as a whole is supported by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. Additional funding was acquired from the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation for a bridging PhD program.
OPTIMAS research is sustained by an annual third party funding acquisition from various competitive sources that averages far above 4 Mio €.
Major funding sources are:
- Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)
- European Union (various programs)
- Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF, Federal Ministry for Education and Research)
- State-related Resources
- Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung (Alexander von Humboldt Foundation).
Strategic funding of OPTIMAS focuses on large scale, interdisciplinary and sustainable collaborative research projects and priority programs. In addition, projects of individual excellence like the ERC Starting Grants to Artur Widera and Andrii Chumak are realized within OPTIMAS.
