New York/Kaiserslautern. The world largest professional organization for electro- and information technology, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has named on January 20, 2010 Professor Burkard Hillebrands as fellow. The head of the magnetism research group at the University of Kaiserslautern is honored for his internationally regarded contributions to the understanding of magnetic excitations, including linear and nonlinear spin waves. The board of directors of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) awards only a small number of scientists with this highest honor. It recognizes special merits in research, teaching and research development. The worldwide organization which is headquartered in New York presently has approximately 400.000 members in 160 countries. Hillebrands received his letter of appointment during a celebratory ceremony hold at one of the worldwide most important conferences in the area of magnetism, which takes currently place in Washington/DC.

Hillebrands is a well-known scientist in the field of solid-state magnetism, especially in the area of magnetoelectronic, spintronic and magnetization dynamics. During the last decade, he made significant contributions to the field of spin-wave excitation in thin films, multilayers and nanostructures. The results achieved by his research group are the foundation for future developments of magnetic memories and sensors. Hillebrands has published his findings in more than 250 articles in renowned research journals.

Yet, Hillebrands is not only member of the state research center OPTIMAS and the department of physics at the University of Kaiserslautern. In addition to his work in research and teaching, he is also Vice President for Research and Teaching since 2006. He has a leading role in the process of scientific profile building of the University of Kaiserslautern. Thus, he is significantly involved in the advancement of Kaiserslautern as well as Rhineland-Palatinate as a centre of science and research.
