Magnetic dynamics studies using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS)

Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy is one of the key techniques to investigate the dynamics properties of magnetic materials. It is based on the interaction of photons with the fundamental excitations of a solid such as magnons, the quanta of magnetic excitations.

The course offers a theoretical and experimental overview of the method giving examples of different types of BLS spectroscopy like space and phase resolved measurements.

The students will gain insights into the technique of Brillouin light scattering (BLS) that is intensively used in the Hillebrands group. They will understand the physical principles that the method is based, they will be introduced to the experimental parts of the measurement and they will have the chance to measure in real time magnon spectra.

The teaching process involves one morning tutorials and an afternoon of experimental measurements

We offer:

- Introduction to BLS spectroscopy

- Demonstration of space and phase resolved measurement technique

- Real time measurements of spin waves in nanostructured magnetic systems

Requirements:

- Basic knowledge in optical spectroscopy and magnetism
